2024 Highlights

Parents as Teachers: A Family Story

Alejandra Colmenares’ journey with Parents as Teachers began when her grandson, Eric, was just two years old. One of their first encounters with the program involved the ASQ-3 assessment, which was used to evaluate Eric’s development. The results indicated that Eric might experience delays, particularly in speech and social skills. Alejandra also shared that Eric was facing challenges with eating. This is their story.

Board of Directors

The Parents as Teachers National Center appointed six new members to its board of directors.

Annual Day at the Ballpark Draws Hundreds

Nearly 500 individuals from Parents as Teachers National Center, families enrolled in Show Me Strong Families, and local Parents as Teachers supporters and advocates shared the day with fans, players, and Fredbird at Busch Stadium in downtown St. Louis for the annual Parents as Teachers Day at the Ballpark.

Ruby Celebration at CITYPARK Soccer Field a Real Gem

To celebrate Parents as Teachers 40th Anniversary, the organization hosted a special Ruby Celebration at the CITYPARK soccer stadium gathering board members, senior leadership, research partners, and individuals who took part in the long history of the organization.

Philanthropy Matters

Thanks to the generosity and kindness of donors, Parents as Teachers is on solid ground and positioned to continue the vital work of preparing children for future success, strengthening families, building strong communities. Parents as Teachers is eternally grateful for the enormous support it received.

Research and Data

A recent Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) conducted in Arizona reveals significant benefits of the Parents as Teachers home visiting program on child and caregiver outcomes, underscoring the program’s effectiveness as a critical early intervention strategy for family support.

2024 Challenge Grants

In 2024, Parents as Teachers awarded $1.8 million to 62 affiliates and five Parents as Teachers State Offices. More than 230 applications were received, all detailing worthy projects in the following categories, Combating Maternal and Infant Mortality, Family Leadership Development, Workforce Development, Program Quality Improvement, Marketing/Communication Support, and Community Responsiveness.

ENhancing Intergenerational HeAlth in Nigeria: Peripartum as Critical Life StagE for CardioVascular Health (ENHANCE-CVH)

A longstanding partnership between Washington University in St. Louis and the Parents as Teachers National Center (PATNC) has led to a National Institute of Health ENHANCE Project grant to expand PAT HEALTH internationally to Abuja, Nigeria with new partners from the University of Abuja and New York University. PAT HEALTH is an initiative that aims to help combat maternal morbidity and mortality through addressing cardiovascular health.

State and Country Offices Open in Alaska and Switzerland

Foundational Curriculum

Over the past 40 years, Parents as Teachers’ curricula has experienced remarkable growth, and it will undoubtedly continue to advance as we expand our understanding of families and their diverse needs.

In celebration of the 40th Anniversary year, the Parents as Teachers National Center is excited to announce the integration of its core curricula and the revival of the trademark “Born to Learn™.”

Advancing Community Responsiveness

The Family and Community Engagement Council of Parents as Teachers is actively bolstering organizational effectiveness by prioritizing fidelity to the families and communities we serve, meeting them where they are and building on their strengths.

Connecting Communities

The 2024 International Parents as Teachers Conference proudly launched its first Indigenous Convening Luncheon, hosted by Parents as Teachers board directors, senior leadership, and FACE program leaders.

2024 Engage App Released

Thanks to Enterprise Mobility’s pledge, nearly 1000 affiliates now have access to the app, and monthly adoption webinars are being held. Over 1800 parent educators and 2000 parents are actively using this platform to support their work.

This tool reinforces the critical connection between parents and parent educators and allows for parent educators and the families they serve to text chat, call, and video conference, and access vital curricula and resources right from their smartphones or tablets.

International Conference Breaks Records as Largest Home Visiting Conference

The 2024 Parents as Teachers International Conference in San Diego, CA shattered previous attendance records, drawing in a staggering 2,518 attendees, with 2,174 of these attending in-person and 344 participating virtually.

National Center News

In 2024, Show Me Strong Families (SMSF) celebrated its 10th anniversary in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. Key events like the First Birthday celebration, the Baby Shower, My Birthing Story, and the Women’s Engagement Café foster community connections, with the latter bringing together influential women and young mothers to share experiences.

Each day, in all corners of the United States and across the globe, we provide proven tools, resources, and knowledge that community agencies and home visiting professionals can use to strengthen the lives of parents, caregivers, and children right in their homes.

OUR Approach

The Parents as Teachers approach is to partner, facilitate and reflect. We do this at every level of our organization, from a parent educator visiting a family in their home, all the way to the work of the national center.
