Van Buren ISD’s Family Links Program: A Year of Growth, Recognition, and Community Impact

Van Buren ISD’s Family Links Parents as Teachers program in Michigan has had an exciting and transformational year, thanks in part to a generous $12,500 workforce development grant. These funds enhanced staff capacity, strengthened community outreach, and built program visibility.

The grant enabled the team to complete four key professional development activities:

  • Hosted and attended an 8-hour Mental Health First Aid training
  • Engaged in an outreach-focused session with ESL migrant educators to better serve the Hispanic community
  • Participated in cultural competence professional development
  • Attended the Annual Parents as Teachers International Conference

In addition, the program underwent a complete rebrand, including the creation of a new, high-quality brochure to promote its services to families across the county.

The impact of these efforts has been far-reaching. Earning Blue Ribbon Affiliate status shined a well-deserved spotlight on the program, which has supported local families for nearly 25 years. Recognition of this achievement spread throughout the district and was celebrated by the school board, the ISD, the early childhood task force, and the program’s advisory council.

Attending the international conference was especially meaningful for the Family Links team, providing valuable time for bonding, learning, and networking with educators from across the country. Team members returned inspired, empowered, and more deeply connected to the mission of supporting young families.

As one team member noted, “Speaking with other educators and comparing practices was a highlight — it reaffirmed that we’re doing important work.”

Today, the broader community is more aware of the high-quality services Family Links offers. Through training, visibility, and recognition, the team has strengthened its ability to meet families where they are — supporting them with knowledge, compassion, and culturally responsive care.

Parents as Teachers National Center commends you on your commitment to children and families in your community.
