Too many babies are dying before their first birthday. Some neighborhoods have rates three times higher than the national average. Black babies are three times more likely to die — and the gap is widening.
Each year, PATNC, in conjunction with FLOURISH St. Louis, works to reduce infant mortality in St. Louis, Missouri.
The two groups host a birthday party celebrating area children turning one-year-old. The initiative is part of the groups’ Safe Sleep project, which aims to educate parents on the proper ways to prepare kids for sleeping in their beds and prevent crib deaths.
